Meta serves ads on social media Facebook and Instagram by understanding users’ interests and needs. As a result, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram regularly logs the internet usage history, including location, of adults as well as children and teenagers.
Furthermore, by consuming this information, children and teenagers become addicted to using social media over time. Meta was sued in the United States last October in an effort to stop this practice.
According to the complaint, Meta systematically collected information from children and adolescents. Children, in particular, will gather all information about a topic or content on Instagram, regardless of whether they are familiar with the group they are connected to or exchange various messages.
By looking at this data, young people are shown various advertisements and commercials. However, under the US Children's Online Safety Act, children's data cannot be collected without parental consent.
The lawsuit also accuses Meta of manipulating its own app's algorithms so that children and teens only see the content they choose. This has resulted in children and teenagers becoming addicted to social media, using Facebook and Instagram for long periods of time without even realizing it.
Additionally, millions of minors use Instagram and Meta takes no action. According to Meta, Instagram does not allow anyone under the age of 13 to open an account.
If someone creates an account using false information, it will be difficult to verify later. However, upon verification, all accounts with false information will be deleted.
