Sir Frederick Williams patented Random Access Memory, or RAM. This type of RAM is called a Williams tube. This is an improved cathode ray tube.
On the surface of the tube, draw dots and dashes made of a material that produces charges that represent the binary numbers 0 and 1. This was the main memory of vacuum tube computers such as the IBM 701.
Williams developed his storage device at the University of Manchester.
