Microsoft is rolling out the ability to remove various Windows linked apps and browsers to comply with the terms of the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA). To this end, the company has opened a preview version of the new update for the Windows 11 operating system. With the new updated version, people living in different European countries can delete various Microsoft applications, Edge browser and Bing search engine built into Windows if necessary.
Microsoft said in a blog post that it plans to make the necessary changes to Windows 11 "23H2" builds and Windows 10 "22H2" builds to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act. Under the provisions of the directive, the changes will be implemented in the EU by March 6, 2024.
Due to these new updates, various Windows applications including Microsoft Edge, Bing, Camera, and Cortana may be removed or uninstalled from your computer. Additionally, they can be downloaded and installed online at any time.
It is worth noting that the European Union has formulated a policy called the Digital Markets Act, which aims to reduce the dominance of large technology companies in the technology field and create competition. The policy also imposes several restrictions on major technology companies and platforms to create a safer online environment.
As part of this, Microsoft is changing the rules that enforce the use of various apps and features related to Windows. Of course, you can't delete any Windows-related apps or browsers, even if you want to from outside Europe.
Apps made by different organizations can be used in Windows
